Extreme and contradictory weather\u2014droughts followed by floods, unseasonable frosts, and shifting bloom cycles\u2014is emerging as the defining challenge for an industry that generates billions of dollars annually and supports hundreds of thousands of livelihoods.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"africasvolatilewaters\">Africa&#8217;s Volatile Waters<\/h2>\n<p>Kenya&#8217;s Lake Naivasha, which anchors a flower industry that supplies Europe&#8217;s major markets, has undergone a startling reversal. After years of drought-driven decline and concerns over water abstraction for rose cultivation, the lake has been rising since roughly 2015. Unusually heavy rainfall in the Aberdare mountain range has pushed water levels steadily upward, inundating farms and displacing thousands of residents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some growers have already seen parts of their farms encroached by the rising lake waters, disrupting production activities in affected areas,&#8221; said Lina Jamwa, head of membership engagement at the Kenya Flower Council. The council continues surveying farms to assess total losses.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Mbugua, general manager of Wildfire Flowers Kenya, described mounting pressure from multiple directions. &#8220;We&#8217;ve seen increased disease pressure due to unusual weather patterns,&#8221; he said, noting that excessive heat drives pest outbreaks while low temperatures increase fungal infections that reduce yields.<\/p>\n<p>Nine hundred miles north, Ethiopia&#8217;s Lake Ziway tells an opposite but equally troubling story. The lake&#8217;s surface has shrunk by roughly eight percent since 2000, while one of the world&#8217;s largest rose farms operates along its shore. Frank Ammerlaan, a second-generation Dutch grower who founded AQ Roses in Ethiopia in 2006, described conditions he once considered optimal as increasingly precarious.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"temperatureextremesintheandes\">Temperature Extremes in the Andes<\/h2>\n<p>Colombia&#8217;s flower industry, which supplies about seventy-five percent of its exports to the United States, faces a different kind of volatility. In 2010, an unusual cold snap struck the savanna surrounding Bogot\u00e1 just weeks before Valentine&#8217;s Day\u2014the single most important date on the global flower calendar, accounting for roughly twelve percent of Colombia&#8217;s annual sales.<\/p>\n<p>Growers sprayed water over rose beds in a desperate attempt to release latent heat as the water froze, but significant holiday production was lost. &#8220;If you don&#8217;t do well in Valentine&#8217;s it&#8217;s a lost year,&#8221; said Fernando Arenas of the flower company El Redil, summing up industry sentiment.<\/p>\n<p>By 2024, the threat had reversed. Record-high temperatures and dry conditions pushed roses to bloom earlier than intended, disrupting carefully timed harvest schedules. &#8220;El Ni\u00f1o has definitely arrived with clear blue skies and high-temperature records across Colombia,&#8221; said Elkin Farf\u00e1n, a planning manager and award-winning grower, calling it a challenging time for exporters.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"europeswetwinters\">Europe&#8217;s Wet Winters<\/h2>\n<p>In the Netherlands, Arjan Smit has spent his entire life cultivating tulips, continuing a family business his grandfather started in 1940. The climate his father knew, however, has fundamentally shifted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The climate has changed. We can feel that,&#8221; Smit said. &#8220;We have more wet periods. Last year, it was just raining, raining, raining.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The result: approximately eight to nine percent of bulbs were lost to standing water, killed outright. Combined with reduced planting, Smit estimates his farm faces at least a thirteen percent loss of new bulbs for the following season. Where he once watered fields two to four times per spring, he now waters weekly\u2014a tenfold increase in cost.<\/p>\n<p>Tulip bulbs require long, cold, dry winters to develop properly. Annual temperatures in the Netherlands have risen roughly 2.3 degrees Celsius since 1901, according to World Bank data, measurably reducing the frost days the crop depends on. De Vroomen Garden Products, a major wholesale supplier, reported sourcing only about eighty percent of the tulip bulbs the market required in 2024; industry analysts later revised the shortfall to roughly thirty percent.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"indiasfestivalcalendarcollapses\">India&#8217;s Festival Calendar Collapses<\/h2>\n<p>India&#8217;s marigold growers, who supply an unbroken cycle of weddings and religious festivals, occupy a particularly exposed position. In autumn 2025, days of unseasonal rain destroyed crops approaching harvest in Maharashtra&#8217;s Bhiwandi district. Standing water turned blooms black, and a fungal blight spread through the fields.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The flowers were just about to bloom when the rain came,&#8221; one grower reported. &#8220;Within a few hours, everything was destroyed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ganesh Patil, who farms two acres of marigolds, said the rains &#8220;completely wiped out&#8221; his crop. Traders refused to buy what remained.<\/p>\n<p>Farmers have begun using a new term to describe their predicament: &#8220;wet drought&#8221;\u2014conditions so saturated they destroy crops, yet falling outside the government&#8217;s disaster classification system for drought relief.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"californiasburningcoast\">California&#8217;s Burning Coast<\/h2>\n<p>In December 2017, the Thomas Fire swept toward Carpinteria, home to a dense cluster of flower farms beneath the Santa Ynez Mountains. Dani Hahn, owner of Rose Story Farm, watched firefighters attempt a controlled backburn to stop the advancing blaze.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know we live in a desert climate and are prone to wildfires, but I don&#8217;t think anyone could expect the scope of this,&#8221; she said afterward.<\/p>\n<p>The fire destroyed more than seven hundred homes and claimed a firefighter&#8217;s life. While most farms survived, shipping was interrupted for an industry that cannot pause. &#8220;These aren&#8217;t crops that can just hang on trees and wait until this thing passes,&#8221; said Kasey Cronquist, then chief executive of the California Cut Flower Commission.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"afragileindicator\">A Fragile Indicator<\/h2>\n<p>The flower trade&#8217;s vulnerability lies in its dual fragility: a product that cannot be stored against bad seasons, cannot be moved out of danger, and derives its entire economic value from narrow ceremonial windows\u2014weddings, festivals, holidays\u2014that do not shift to accommodate weather.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s cherry blossom record, spanning twelve centuries, has been broken repeatedly in a single decade. Tokyo&#8217;s trees now bloom roughly 1.2 days earlier per decade. Researchers project that under continued warming, Somei-Yoshino cherry trees could eventually stop flowering entirely at the southern limits of their range, unable to accumulate sufficient winter chill.<\/p>\n<p>Growers are adapting with solar installations, drought-tolerant variety trials, biological pest control, and fire-preparedness infrastructure. But none of these responses resolves the underlying problem.
