SUMPUR KUDUS, Indonesia – On a mud-soaked forest floor in West Sumatra on Nov. 19, 2025, a man fell to his knees and wept. Septian “Deki” Andriki, a former elementary school teacher turned self-taught botanist, had spent 13 years chasing a ghost.

The object of his quest: Rafflesia hasseltii, a parasitic, leafless flower capable of growing larger than a dinner plate. The species had not been confirmed in the wild for more than a decade. Andriki’s emotional collapse before the bud’s blood-red, white-speckled petals—captured on video and viewed millions of times—became an unlikely viral moment. But behind the tears lay a serious scientific achievement and a stark warning about the fragility of the world’s rarest plants.

A 13-Year Hunt Ends in Mud and Joy

Andriki’s search began in 2012, fueled by tips, false leads, and half-remembered sightings across the Indonesian archipelago. The breakthrough came from a local resident’s tip earlier this year. That lead sent Andriki, along with Oxford Botanic Garden’s Chris Thorogood and Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency researcher Joko Ridho Witono, on a nearly day-long trek through tiger-inhabited rainforest in Sijunjung Regency.

When the team finally reached the bloom, Andriki could barely speak. “I just cried,” he later said. Thorogood described feeling like “the luckiest guy alive.”

Rafflesia hasseltii belongs to a genus of about 42 recognized species—strange, chlorophyll-less parasites that live invisibly inside host vines for years, erupting only briefly into flowers that can span nearly a meter and reek of rotting meat to attract carrion flies. That combination of rarity and biological oddity makes rafflesias a holy grail for botanists and a nightmare for conservationists. Roughly two-thirds of known hasseltii populations grow outside legally protected forests, exposed to logging and land conversion.

The rediscovery was part of a multinational research effort backed by the University of Oxford, involving scientists from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The team is collecting DNA from more than a dozen rafflesia variants to map the genus’s evolutionary relationships—hoping genetics may finally explain why these flowers bloom so rarely and unpredictably.

Beyond the Viral Moment: A Year of Botanical Surprises

The Sumatran find was only the most photogenic example of a far larger enterprise. In 2025, botanists worldwide described hundreds of new plant species—many already endangered by the time they received a name.

At the Missouri Botanical Garden, scientists formally describe roughly 200 new species annually, accounting for one in every 10 new plant names globally. This year’s highlights included:

Perhaps most striking: Rojovitis, a new subgenus of Vitis—the grape genus—built around two newly identified wild grape species from Chiapas, Mexico, distinguished by red flowers and stem pores. It marked only the third recognized grape subgenus in nearly a century.

Citizen Science and Drones Join the Hunt

Not all discoveries required jungle expeditions. In Big Bend National Park, Texas, volunteer botanist Deb Manley photographed unfamiliar maroon flowers among rocks and uploaded the images to the citizen-science platform iNaturalist. Expert identification led to an entirely new genus nicknamed the “wooly devil”—the first new plant genus documented in a U.S. national park since 1976.

In Hawaii, researchers from the National Tropical Botanical Garden, the Smithsonian, and a robotics firm used a drone fitted with a robotic collecting arm to sample a cliff face on Kauai inaccessible to humans. The drone returned with Schiedea waiahuluensis, a new carnation-family species—likely the first new plant species ever discovered by drone. The mission also yielded an unidentified insect possibly new to science.

Naming a Species, Saving a Life

For conservationists, these discoveries carry a sobering subtext. Many newly named plants are already among the rarest organisms on Earth—restricted to a single mountain, dune, or cliff—and already threatened by habitat loss. As botanists have long argued, naming a species is the essential first step before any legal protection, funding, or conservation plan can exist. A plant without a name has no defense.

Scientists estimate that thousands of plant species remain undescribed, many declining toward extinction before formal recognition—a phenomenon called “dark extinction.” The 2025 tally of new species is not simply nature’s inventory. It is a race against time, run one flowering cactus, one drone flight, one tear-streaked jungle trek at a time.
